Cianjur Adventure Programme is a pioneer in community-based tourism in Java and provides travellers with a great opportunity to experience real Indonesian life in the town of Cianjur, West Java.
The Reason that we created this community based tourism in non-touristy town is we feel that most travelers don’t get the opportunity to learn and experience the real life and culture of indonesia and it is difficult to go to non-touristy town to find people who can speak English, and Cianjur Adventure has the human resources and the team who speak English and can show Indonesia properly.
Cianjur is a small town Located between 2 big Cities of Jakarta and Bandung, about 3 Hours bus ride from Jakarta and 90 minutes bus ride from Bandung, this is a good place to escape big cities and to help you find us, we organise the pick up from Jakarta airport, Jakarta, Bandung and Bogor.
Founded in 1998 by a bunch of English Speaking Local, some members of the Team have traveled extensively, the programme allows travellers to explore Indonesia off the beaten path, accompanied by Our team (Andang, Dewa Putu, Jaya, Anthony, Yanty, Encin, and Dio), enthusiastic locals who are passionate about sharing their knowledge of the local culture, nature and cuisine.
Our programme is flexible, you have freedom to do things you would like to do for as long or as short as you wish, you can do these activities such as; Hiketo rural village, Visit floating village, traditional market, Tea plantation and factory, Recycle project, botanical garden, hike Pangrango National Park, cooking class,
You can also help local Teachers teaching English, or visit the local school, this is a very good way to interact and mingle with the local.
as Cianjur is off the beaten path, there is hardly any tourist around anywhere you go, you can experience the friendliness of local people.
Visit Cianjur
However, I understand that it’s often not so easy to visit places off the beaten path if you don’t know anyone who can show you around and who speaks English. So my team and I are eager to show travellers the real Indonesia, in a town where the locals are genuinely interested in meeting you. You will experience the local culture, taste the local food and eat a lot of tropical fruits. Cianjur currently doesn’t receive many tourists and, consequently, tourists pay the same prices as the locals.
At the same time, doing some volunteer work and school visit (optional) is a great way to learn more about the culture and to mingle with locals. Learning how to cook local delicacies and how to grow rice are just some of the other activities on offer.
Homestay accommodation is arranged at reasonable rate. This includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as tours to places of interest nearby such as the floating village, tea plantations, rural villages and rice fields (some of these will require an additional payment, but this is always arranged at Backpackers rate).
To help you find us, we can arrange to pick you up from the airport, or from nearby cities, such as Bogor, Bandung and Jakarta.
I hope you will find this information useful. We have a lot of people coming, but we limit the numbers in order to maintain our quality of service, so please try to book in advance.
Cianjur adventure team look forward to getting you have a memorable time here.
Things to do
A dam was constructed in the 1980’s, resulting in the creation of a large lake. Many locals have constructed simple floating houses on the lake, where they engage in the farming of ornamental fish. A boat trip on this lake is a relaxing way to enjoy the landscape, as well as to observe local life on the water.
From the boat, you will see many floating houses with the dramatic volcano range in the background.
Boat trip got you hungry? Enjoy a feast of authentic local dishes – fish, curried chicken, tofu, omelet, potatoes, and sweet and sour vegetable soup.
Local transport around Cianjur is dominated by small vans that pass by every few moments. They are often crammed full of more passengers than you can imagine, but are cheap, fast, and full of friendly locals
Botanical Gardens
The famous Botanical gardens in Cibodas are about 50 minutes away from Cianjur by motorbike. There are interesting plants, flowers and cacti to see, but even without much interest in botany it’s a good place just for a walk in the beautiful surroundings.
Rural Village
Outside the hustle and bustle of the city center, rural Sundanese culture lives on in the small villages scattering the countryside. A hike to such a village is a great way to come face to face with Indonesian village life, while hiking through dramatic landscapes of lush rice fields.
You will hike around 2 hours to reach the village. On the way are brilliant green terraced rice fields.
In addition to growing rice, the cultivation of brown sugar is another important source of income for the villagers. Here, in a village home, brown sugar is being prepared on a wood fire.
We enjoy an authentic Indonesian lunch prepared by the local family.
After lunch and an invigorating massage, continuing the hike through the countryside, passing by amused local children.
Beside rice, tea is also grown in Cianjur, a landscape of Tea Plantation and rice field is unique, breath taking view, clean fresh air, and it is very SILENCE, you only hear the nature, Birds, wind, the nature in this part of this region is untouched.
After a along rice field and tea plantation walk, it ends at the waterfall where you can have a bath .

The megalithic site of Gunung Padang begins to reveal its secrets
Gunung Padang is a remarkable archaeological region located 120 kilometres south of Jakarta in Indonesia, known for having the largest number of megaliths in the country. It has been the subject of much controversy in recent years as scientific research has suggested that one particular site, consisting of an ancient arrangement of megalithic stones, sits atop a hill that is actually a gigantic, pyramid-shaped tomb, dating back thousands of years. Such conclusions have, unsurprisingly, been met with fierce resistance from the academic and archaeological community. However, according to a report in Jakarta Post, excavation has now revealed an underground room built in prehistoric times, and the team have dated the youngest layer of the site to 5,200 BC.
According to several experts from the Gunung Padang independent and integrated research team (TTRM), the site could potentially be Indonesia’s oldest and most important prehistoric landmark and should be given priority in conservation efforts.

Last year, Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, a senior geologist at Indonesia’s Centre for Geotechnical Research, conducted extensive surveys of the site, including geo-electric surveys, ground-penetrating radar, core samples, and analysis of stonework. Based on the results, he firmly believes that most of the 100-metre hill, upon which hundreds of megalithic stones are scattered, is actually man-made, built up on several stages over thousands of years by different cultures.
Despite initial opposition to claims that the entire hill was constructed by an ancient civilization, further research has come to confirm this finding and scientists have agreed to categorize the prismatic structure as a stepped pyramid that has an area of 3,094 square meters consisting of five levels. It stands more than 100 meters high and is believed to be the centre of a 25-hectare megalithic site. Dr Natawidjaja realises the challenge he has ahead of him: “It’s a strong case but not an easy case. We are up against the world’s belief.”

Researcher Graham Hancock, who has suggested the site could potentially offer proof for a lost advanced civilization of prehistoric antiquity, states on his website that “the archaeological establishment is scrambling to find some reason to reject and pour scorn on the extraordinary consequences of the excavations now taking place at Gunung Padang”.
According to Hancock, archaeologists have been lobbying to get the work stopped and, at one point, succeeded in significantly slowing down the research efforts. However, in August of this year, Dr Natawidjaja and his team were given full permissions to continue with their work, including approval to excavate the concealed chambers, thanks to intervention from the President of Indonesia, who fully supports the investigation.
“Preliminary excavations have produced results that prove beyond doubt that Gunung Padang in indeed a man-made pyramid of great antiquity as Dr Natawidjaja had long ago proposed,” writes Graham Hancock. “It is now evident to all that the site is vastly older than the 2500 years that archaeologists had insisted upon for decades,” he adds.
